Separation or divorce and your pension

Learn how a separation or divorce affects your pension and review the issues to consider.

Not dividing your pension

You and your former spouse may decide not to divide your pension. If you keep your entire pension in exchange for another family property, you may need to know the value of your future pension to negotiate a settlement with your former spouse.

Your pension is calculated using a formula based on your years of service and salary. If you have not yet retired, you can find a current estimate of your future pension on your Member's benefit statement or by signing in to My Account.

However, the Member's benefit statement does not show you the full monetary value of your pension.

If you would like to know the monetary value of your pension in order to negotiate a settlement with your former spouse, you will need to hire an independent actuary.

Please contact us if you are planning to hire an actuary. We can provide you with the information the actuary will need to complete this calculation.
